wanted him to have it. A little godly wisdom would have been far more appropriate than a faith in something that God never promised.
A young person becomes convinced that God is calling him or her to be a missionary in Europe (or anywhere else), gets training, goes off to the mission field—and fails. He or she may have gone “by faith”, but the faith was not in a promise from God. God gives his promises in the Bible, not in random thoughts that flash into our minds, nor in feelings that we get when considering various ideas, nor through pressure put on us by other people. ' It is not true that “all the promises in the book are mine.” Some of the promises in the Bible are to specific individuals and to no one else. Others are to certain groups of people and apply to an individual only if he is part of that group. Some promises are conditional (if you do this, then I will do that). If we would really walk by Christian faith, let us be sure that our actions are based on promises of God which are directed to us. And if the promises are conditional, let us be sure that we meet the conditions.
