Mr. Wickens observed that “we were criticized for talking about tranquil streets - this will make the traffic infinitely worse.
“We shouldn’t be hypocrites - we all want a landfill, but not in ‘my’ backyard. ... I find it hard to believe that one mile from the county seat is the optimum site. . . . But if it is I still have concerns,” Mr. Wickens continued.
Evelyn Willis added that “I see only disadvantages to this plan. Can’t we ask the supervisors to look elsewhere? Ask for three months; six months; to find somewhere else?’
The mayor replied “. . . (the supervisors) are under a tight time constraint. They have a deadline of July 1, 1987 to close the Woodville site (the present landfill on Clifton Clark’s property on Rt. 621 outside Woodville).”
Mr. Wickens retorted, “Sometimes disasters are bom of necessity. This is incredibly poor planning. . . . the traffic . . . the proximity to population centers
The council members 51so expressed concern about the possibility of waste from outside the county being deposited in the landfill; smell; possible problems with rodents at the site; and the visual pollution caused by burning at the site or by windblown garbage in the surrounding area.
Mr. Morehouse added, however, “if they have a license to operate in the county, there’s not a thing we can do ak*out (those concerns).”
“Those are not matters under the purview of the council,” Mr. Wickens agreed. “We can’t do anything.”
Charlie Eldred suggested that “a lot has been said tonight that I’m not sure the council as an official body can address . . . but there are several concerns you can address firmly. Traffic can be addressed through the
