With escalating health care costs, higher ratios of retirees to workers in older industries and pressures to reduce labor costs, some companies have started cutting costs by cutting the retiree health benefits they now provide. When an employer closes a plant, declares bankruptcy, or simply amends the plan, retirees suddenly may find themselves without health insurance. Especially vulnerable are those retirees who were forced or willingly took early retirement before becoming eligible for Medicare. They soon discover that buying private health coverage is prohibitively expensive, if even available.
