This week is Fire Prevention Week. Throughout the country, children and adults alike will be exhorted to “Be careful with fire.” The winter heating season, especially in a rural area with its many residents who heat with wood, is statistically a dangerous time of the year, with a high incidence of serious fires.
We join with the Virginia State Department of Fire Programs and the Rappahannock Fire and Rescue Association, along with the county’s individual volunteer departments, in urging all Rappahannock residents to play it safe with wood this winter. Information about safer wood heating, a major cause of house fires, is available from the county government offices, fire departments, the building inspector, and most stores which sell wood stoves.
