The private sector today donates approximately $40 million annually to support 4-H at the national, state and local levels. Through National 4H Council, some 1,800 corporations, foundations and organizations contribute funds that provide essential elements of motivation, incentives and training for both youth and volunteers.
The volunteer corps of 4-H - some 600,000 strong - is its real backbone and basic to the cost-effective delivery of practical education experiences. For every hour spent by a professional Extension worker in 4-H, volunteers donate 10 hours of time. By conservative estimate, volunteers nationwide contribute some $1 billion annually in time, travel and support - far in excess of the total combined public and private dollars directly invested in 4-H.
Volunteers not only give leadership to 4-H experiences for youth, they also keep the program relevant to local community needs and interest.
While most volunteers serve in teaching roles, an increasing number are assuming broadened roles in middle management, service on boards and committees, as coordinators of events and in helping broaden the funding base for 4-H.
The contributions of volunteers to 4-H is tremendous; however, 4-H does reciprocate. Volunteers receive the latest information, develop their own leadership skills and experience personal growth. During the process of helping youth develop, adults find themselves growing in their own areas of self-fulfillment. 4-H is truly a people development program.
The 45 million 4-H alumni form an important and invaluable support base to 4-H and Extension. Recent surveys of 4-H alumni have resulted in a flood of comments crediting the 4-H experience with having a strong influence on successful careers, achieving personal goals, strengthening family and community commitment and enhancing the quality
