Dorothy Spencer
Miss Dorothy S. Spencer, a teacher at Chesterfield County’s Thomas Dale High School for more than 30 years, died Feb. 19 at her home after a lengthy illness. She was 71.
A native of Prince Edward County, Miss Spencer attended public school there and graduated from Longwood College.
Miss Spencer taught high school in Matthews County, Cumberland and Sperryville.
She began teaching biology at Thomas Dale in the mid-1940s and taught at the school until her retirement in 1977.
Miss Spencer was a member of the Longwood Alumni Association, the Guinea Extension Club and the Cumberland Woman’s Club. She taught Sunday School for a number of years at the Tar Wallet Baptist Church in Cumberland.
Survivors include two sistfers, Mrs. Fannie Bell Hutchinson of Montross and Mrs. Thelma S. Putney of Cumberland.
A graveside service was conducted Feb. 21 at the Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity.
Alice Burke
Alice Houghton Burke, 84, of Flint Hill, died Feb. 27 in the Royal Haven Rest Home in Front Royal.
Mrs. Burke was born July 22, 1903, in Rappahannock County, the daughter of the late Wilbur H. and Rovilla Parnell Houghton. She was a member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church.
