We saved our worst game for . r last,” was Coach Gary Leake’s reaction to the thrashing his team received at the hands of Page County ' ■ in the Bull Run District semi-final 1 round last Friday in Front Royal. The outcome was never in doubt, and the 84-54 score reflected that.
Last week, Coach Leake said that “It’s always hard to get that third win from a team,” referring to Rappahannock’s two regular season victories over Stonewall Jackson, as well as Page’s two wins over the Panthers.
He was wrong, unfortuntely on both counts.
Last Wednesday, the Panthers beat the Generals again at Rappahannock in the quarter-final round, 61-57. After running up a 10-point lead off the opening tap, then extending it to 22-10 at the end of the first quarter, Rappahannock watched the Generals crank up the heat and go the locker room trailing by only three, 25-22. The Panthers ' were unable to add a point through the first six minutes of the second quarter. 1 In the second half, Stonewall 1 continued to pressure the Panthers, but with two minutes left Rappahan•" nock had amassed a 10-point lead. Once again, however, the Generals ' fought back and sliced it to two ' points with 30 seconds left.
Despite missing foul shots all night, the Panthers managed to stave off Stonewall’s field goal attempts and at the buzzer led by four, - 61-57.
Butch Foster led the Panther at■ tack with 23 points. Eric Dunn contributed 16 and Anthony Porter •another eight. Semi a different story
Although Coach Leake said the ' team was “up for Page County,” the V Panther fans’ enthusiasm was quickly dampened as they watched the Page County team run up a 41-16 halftime lead. Page shot 66 percent from the floor, including four threepoint baskets by Mike Keyser, who rang up 18 points in the half.
Rappahannock did manage to regain its composure after halftime, scoring the first six points of the third quarter to bring the score to 41-22. However, Doug Smith was called on a technical for arguing an official’s call. That seemed to take the wind out of Rappahannock’s sails.
