With a gouu sample of equine breeds and approximately 100 canines set to race March 5 at the Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point, this day in the country promises to be one of the most exciting on the spring racing schedule in Virginia.
Horses, ponies and even mules are slated to run, with at least 10 races filling out the day’s card. The children start off the day on their ponies, the only pony races this year on the Virginia Point-to-Point Circuit.
The timber racing is on the Thornton Hill Farm course near Sperryville, in the Rappahannock County mountains. Spectators are reminded not to hold their breath as horses race down a steep mountainside to a jump two-thirds of the distance to the bottom.
In the owner-rider timber race, Nelson Gunnell has entered Make the Move, the First Colony hurdle series champion two years ago now ready to make a first start over imposing post-and-rail fences ranging up to 4 feet in height.
Make the Move will have his work cut out for him, however. Winner of last week’s timber contest for gentlemen at Casanova, Oriental Express and Bruce Rosenbaum, are signed up, as is two-time series champion Dr. William Russell.
