For six years this nation has enjoyed unprecedented economic growth under enlightened leadership from the White House. But the pendulum is swinging back toward an era when we will all have to tighten our belts, and there is much in Virginia’s next two-year budget that will not provide for this reality.
The Governor, in this budget, has spent the $154 million surplus from the last budget, plus assigned uncertain revenues from a Virginia lottery to handle capital outlay projects in order to pay for, among other items, the Housing Partnership Fund, a theme park in Roanoke, a space age museum in Hampton, and something called the Information Management Council — whatever that may be.
In my opinion, however, the most glaring, and troublesome, aspects of his budget proposals are those that will increase the government bureaucracy. Upon spot examination, I count more that 4.000 new full-time positions being budgeted within state government over the next biennium.
