Rappahannock News pholo'Lou Hatter BRUSH FIRES, like this one on the Shade Road in January, can be prevented by obeying the state’s burning ban, now in effect until May 15. No outdoor burning, including inside open barrels, is allowed until after 4 p.m. Even then, Forest Warden Tippy Jenkins cautions residents to be careful — sudden gusts can blow sparks into dry grass or leaves. He suggests that burning be postponed until rain is falling or after the ban is lifted. For information on burning laws, a pre-fire check of the burn area, or advice on whether current conditions are okay for burning, call Warden Jenkins, 987-8837. Mr. Jenkins also suggested that anyone doing a controlled bum call the Sheriff’s Department (675-3331) and advise the dispatcher, so that reports of smoke don’t bring out the fire department.
