At least a dozen mules are expected to race in the premier mule race of the Virginia racing circuit. The riders of these mules are required to wear “hunting attire,” but don’t be fooled.

The day finishes up with the famous hound race where an expected 100 hounds will chase a pre-laid scent

Earlier in the day, hunter pairs will compete in a seemingly more leisurely fashion for year-end hunter pace awards. The pairs races get underway at 10 a.m. Post time for the first race is at noon.

Thornton Hill Farm is located two miles south of Sperryville on Route 522, off Route 211. General admission to the races is $5, with children under 12 admitted free. An additional $3 for parking will be charged for each car.
