Any group or person 18 years or older or group with a sponsor at; least 18 years of age can adopt a highway — a tw’o-mile, but not more than seven-mile, stretch of nearly any Virginia roadway — for a minimum of two years. A simple permit filed with the VDOT residency office designates the space to you or your group, and the office provides signs, trash bags and reflector vests.

All the designee does is pick up the litter — bottles, cans and paper — along that area four times per year.
