Photo courtesy of the Historical Society THE HOME OF J.Y. Menefee stood on Main St. were the Rappahannock News is now located. It was one of several stately old homes which were tom down during the 1940s when the road was widened. Mr. Menefee was the county’s Commonwealth’s Attorney in the 1850s. The photo was taken 1938. When the house was demolished, a jar of money was discovered in the basement. Many longtime town residents say that the Menefee home was the most beautiful in Washington.
