consume, not produce. They do not build houses, grow better and cheaper food, provide clothing and transportation. As more wealth is taxed by non-productive governments, less remains for investment to raise living standards. The more laws and rules imposed from Washington and Richmond, the less freedom for the people of Rappahannock and Prince William counties.
Where services — defense, foreign affairs, order, mail — are needed, the absence of competition results in inefficiency. UPS does not provide better and cheaper service than the U.S. Postal Service because its workers are individually superior; it does because competition, Federal Express and others, works constantly to push UPS to improve service and lower costs.
Opportunities and results: Here too the parties differ sharply. Democrats aim for levelled results, for minimizing variations in wealth, never mind that this puts the cart before the horse and always leads to less for all.
Republicans believe in equal opportunity. It is a goal difficult to reach: nature does not provide us equal ability, determination or strength. But it is worth working for . : opportunities abounded in the United States in the last century, when governments’ roles and sizes were small. People of ambition, energy and ideas earned success for themselvesand benefits for society, created the world’s most prosperous economy. This at exactly the time when the U.S. was the world’s freest country — nut a coincidence.
