A free community-education program on depression will be held at Culpeper Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
The presentation will be given by Dr. Jason Worchel, board-certified psychiatrist and medical director at Pinebrooke Psychiatric Center. “People of any age can become depressed,” said Dr. Worchel. “I will explain the causes of depression and how to recognize depression, share current treatments and discuss the role depression plays in suicide."
“Depression can affect sleep, appetite, productivity and give someone a deep sense of worthlessness. If these symptoms continue for more than three weeks, there is cause to be concerned,” Dr. Worchel stressed.
“Most depression lasts from six to 18 months and is followed by a remission period, but depression may return. With treatment, however, the likelihood of relapse is much less,” said Dr. Worchel. Current treatments include medications, short-term psychotherapy, activities therapy and in some cases, electroconvulsive therapy.
Suicide is the major risk of depression when left untreated. White, single male alcoholics over the age of 50 have the highest percentage of suicides for any group. “I want to stress the interplay between drugs and alcohol in depression. Depression leads to increased use of street drugs because of the temporary high that is received. When treating depression, the underlying chemical dependency has to be treated as well,” commented Dr. Worchel.
“We are recognizing depression more frequently in young children. Dr. Stephen Heim, a clinical psychologist, will be on hand to address childhood and adolescent depression.
