with elderly residents who are unable to cope with the cold. Living in isolated areas, in homes which are often poorly insulated, she said they are prime candidates for hypothermia and other weather related problems.
One caseworker, she said, called on an elderly man and found his fire had gone out. The temperature inside his house had dropped to below freezing, and the man was so chilled that he had been unable to start the fire or call for help. The caseworker got the fire going, fixed some hot soup and got the man warmed back up.
Mrs. Bowen had high praise for the volunteers who assist the department by keeping in touch with elderly neighbors, making sure that they are warm and have enough food in the house.
She added that anyone who knows of a neighbor or relative who might need assistance in coping with the cold should call the Department of Social Services, located on Gay St. in Washington (675-3313).
