The Virginia Department of Forestry is now accepting seedling orders for the spring planting season.
Landowners should place their orders soon, since some species are available in limited supplies. .This year there are 24 different species for sale. A wildlife package containing 100 seedlings of various trees and shrubs used by wildlife is also offered. The seedlings are sold in bundles of 25 to 1,000, depending on species.
Department of Forestry seedlings have earned the designation of “Virginia’s Finest.” This designation by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services assures landowners that they are getting quality seedlings that meet a high standard.
For example, the seedlings must be free of insects and disease, have no mechanical damage and have minimum top lengths and stem diameters. In addition to these standards, 100 percent of the white pine and loblolly pine seedlings come from genetically improved stock. This tree
