BLACKSBURG — Beginning this tax-filing season, all children over the age of two must have Social Security numbers, and parents must ; provide specific information about their child-care providers to be eligible for child-care tax credits.

Last year’s tax returns required children over five years old to have Social Security numbers, said Elaine Scott, family finance specialist with Virginia Cooperative Extension at Virginia Tech.

It takes approximately six weeks to receive a new Social Security I number, although “parents can fill . out their forms and note they have • applied for, but not yet received, the I number,” Ms. Scott/said. “However, I would recommend having the child’s social security number at filing time. You’re less likely to be audited or to run into holdup with your refund.”
