animal motives may be almost beyond our comprehension and certainly should not be judged by human standards — yet it seemed to me that the fox’s parting look said, “Oh ho! Somebody has moved onto my property.’’
Later, on an early morning after ,,a light snowfall, I was able to do some sleuthing, because a fox ran over the fields and I went over to the tracks while they were fresh. I found the pawprints were not exactly like the ones described in books. The marks were small, not much bigger than a man’s thumbprint, and were diamond-shaped, with long, clawed toe marks at the front. The fox had been “careful” (excuse again the human bias in the word I use)
