The Board of Supervisors decided once again not to fund various social service agencies that regularly request money from the county.
After presentations at Monday evening’s work session by representatives from FORE, the sheltered workshop in Remington, and Legal Services, the supervisors debated cutting the contribution to the Community Services Board and trying to spread the money among some of those agencies, but weren’t able to reach a concensus, and decided to leave the Community Services Board alone and cut the others.
There were no other cuts made, however the board did make some additions to the budget. They decided to add $10,296 to cover health insurance for the supervisors, but most said they would not take advantage of the policy.
They added $900 for rent for County Administrator John McCarthy’s office, because his new space at the former Extension office will not be ready by July 1. In addition they added $2,000 for the Extension Service for heating and electrical service at the new office above the Kramer and Eiland Woodworking shop.
The supervisors also added $250 for part-time help at the building inspector’s office, for contracting for specialized, expert assistance with some difficult inspections. They also added $1,000 to the building inspection office budget to cover the cost of a radio for the Building Inspector Ritchie Burke’s car.
The supervisors also agreed with Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham to add $2,000 to the budget for a contribution to the Rappahannock Athletic Association to support the purchase of equipment for youth sports. They agreed, however, with Piedmont representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes that the money should be available to youth softball and soccer also, not just for baseball.
There were also additions to the registrar’s budget. The amount for travel was increased from $400 to $600. New registrar Nancy Leake said she will need to go to1 Richmond for several days to receive training on new computer equipment. She also asked that the amount for the assistant registrar be increased from $2,700 to $3,140
