“Buckle Up, America!” Week will be observed in Virginia May 21 to 28, and the Virginia State Police encourage all drivers and passengers to use their safety belts and to buckle up children properly in child safety seats. To underscore the message, troopers are displaying “Buckle Up” bumper stickers on their patrol cars.
The national and state observance of Buckle Up Week includes the Memorial Day holiday, the traditional start of summer travel. The VSP’s public awareness effort is designed to raise the nation’s consciousness about the benefits of safety belt use, according to State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.
During the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Virginia State Police will participate in Operation CARE, an acronym for Combined Accident Reduction Effort. CARE is a state-sponsored national effort to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries during the nuyor holiday periods of Memorial Day, July Fourth, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day.
In Virginia, the State Police participate in Operation CARE, Ms. Caldwell explained, by increasing the number of patrols on the most heavily travelled roads in the Commonwealth. For statistical purposes, the CARE Memorial Day weekend begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 25 and ends at midnight, Monday, May 28.
