Turning to the county’s budget for next year, Mr. Massie asked, “Well, what kind of tax rate are we going to have?”
Mr. McCarthy said accountant Wally Cox is becoming more comfortable with a rate of 75 cents per' $100 valuation on real estate. That is the rate in the current budget. The new budget was advertised at a tax rate of 78 cents.
“You have the JLARC (Joint Legislative Audit and Review Com-! mission) bill out there,” Mr. McCar-! thy cautioned. JLARC funding; formulas have already increased the; county’s share of the school and; health department budgets and will have further impact in future years.
Another possibility which will be considered by next year’s General Assembly is that the county may be forced to pick up more of the cost of the constitutional officers. Mr. McCarthy suggested that to prepare for that impact in future years, the supervisors might consider a rate of 76 or 77 cents this year.
“We need to raise those health department fees,” Mr. Gilkey suggested.
Mr. McCarthy said the supervisors will soon be getting recommendations on new fees for building and zoning applications to make the building office self-supporting and new fees for some health department services.
