Democrats chose David Smith by acclamation Saturday to challenge U.S. Rep. French Slaughter for the Seventh District congressional seat after secondrunner Alexander “Sandy” Peaslee withdrew and urged party unity.

His voice shaking with emotion, the 33-year old Smith accepted “with great pleasure” the task of trying to unseat the three-term incumbent Republican congressman who has never lost a race in a political career that spans nearly three decades.

Smith’s nomination was sewed up last month when his count of delegates topped a simple majority. Peaslee’s move was

94.9%
