RSVP volunteers are engaged in a great range of social services, assisting literacy projects, food banks, homeless shelters, libraries and schools, to name but a few areas of involvement. More than one-third of our RSVP volunteers serve with programs for young people, demonstrating, as do Foster Grandparent volunteers, the great value of intergenerational volunteering.
Since 1974, Senior Companion Program volunteers have given care and companionship to other seniors. Lending crucial support to Alzheimer’s care projects, hospitals, hospices and the homebound elderly, Senior Companions help enable thousands of their neighbors to remain at home and avoid institutional care.
In a milestone project sponsored in partnership with the American Foundation for the Blind, visually impaired Senior Companions are assisting other blind and visually impaired older people.
During Older Americans Month, I urge all Americans to express support for older volunteers by honoring their many contributions to our country’s future.
