“It’s an intensive use, much more so than agriculture,” supervisors’ representative Mike Massie agreed.
Mr. McCarthy said Dr. Rish also felt he could fit all 18 holes of the golf course onto the portion of the property zoned for agriculture and would not need a zoning amendment to allow a golf course on conservation land. “He will be back for a decision,” Mr. McCarthy said.
Finally, the planners heard from Roger Tomeden, who has not filed a formal application, but wanted to know how the commission members felt about various alternatives for subdividing land he owns near Flint Hill.
Mr. Tomeden owns a 225-acre parcel on Fogg Mountain he bought from Herbert Barksdale. He has an adjoining 53-acre parcel acquired separately from Mr. Barksdale and a 21-acre landlocked parcel acquired from an estate “with about 225 heirs,” he said.
In 1979 Mr. Tomeden donated a scenic easement on the 225-acre parcel to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. This restricted development on the land to no more than three lots of at least 75 acres each.
