Jenkins contributed a grand slam homer, Dorrell added two more round-trippers, and O’Meara also had two home runs as the Yankees hit a season high with five four-baggers in that wild first inning.
Alan Groves pitched three scoreless innings en route to the victory and O’Meara came on in relief to preserve the win.
The Astros were unable to get any offense going against the strong Yankee pitching. Tony Fotenos, Chris Dodson, Andy Grimsley and Charlie Snead each tried to start a rally after reaching base, but three times were erased by the strong arm and aggressive play of Yankee catcher Jeff Atkins.
The turnout of boosters for the game was good, reported coach Donald Dorrell, “but parents and friends of the league’s players are urged to continue to support the league as the season’s excitement is just starting to build.”
Mike Gilkey was in uniform and on the bench for the Yankees, rooting for his teammates after suffering a broken arm last week. “Thanks Mike, for your support,'’ Mr. Dorrell said, “and we all wish you a speedy recovery. The Yankees certainly miss you in the lineup.”
