Archaeological excavations at the third president’s Bedford County retreat began last year. The archaeologists’ findings will provide crucial information needed to restore the buildings and grounds to the way they were in Jefferson’s lifetime.
Jefferson owned his Bedford County plantation from 1773 until his death in 1826. In 1806 he began building his unique octagonal house — a house designed to accommodate Jefferson, the private citizen. The historic property now is owned by a non-profit corporation that is raising money to restore it.
Poplar Forest is open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and major holidays until the end of October.
