Most visitors to Washington’s Independence Day celebration saw Don Watrud. ,v He was hard to miss, walking the streets with a Sony Betacam perched on his shoulder, taping the youngsters at the dunking tank and the Colonial dancers in front of the courthouse.
A closer look revealed “Press” credentials hanging from his belt pack, identifying Mr. Watrud as a photographer with WTTG, Fox Channel 5 in the “other” Washington. On Independence Day, he passed up the capital’s celebration in favor of a “small-town” Fourth of July.
“I grew up in a small town,” Mr. Watrud explained when asked what drew him to the first Washington. “We always do the Fourth of July in D.C. I wanted to do the sights and sounds of the Fourth in a small town.”
Without a reporter or soundman, Mr. Watrud said he was serying as hi$ own reporter, producer and editor for the piece, which ran as a “color” sidebar
