Town meeting
sparks debate
on arts funding

About 35 Rappahannock residents turned out for a town meeting last Saturday to hear and question Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr.
They raised concerns ranging from funding for the National Endowment for the Arts to the cost of the savings and loan scandal.
Rep. Slaughter began the meeting by saying, “The biggest news to come out of Washington last week was the President’s support for raising taxes. I cannot support a tax increase. The citizens don’t feel undertaxed. Rather than raise taxes, we need to hold spending. Every one dollar in additional revenue has led to $1.50 in new spending.”
Rep. Slaughter said he supported the balanced budget amendment. A petition to discharge the amendment from the House Judiciary Committee, which has kept it bottled up since 1982, has received its 218th signature, he said. He added that the amendment would now automatically be brought to the floor of the House for a vote, possiblv in the next week.
