Edith Pond said, “The NEA hasn’t just made two mistakes. The two mistakes were of such magnitude there was no burying it. This is important to Rappahannock people, not because it happened in Rappahannock County, but because it happened in the United States paid for by taxes. Discussions of what NEA supports or doesn’t support shouldn’t be referred to as censorship. Choices should be free but not paid for by tax money.”
Robert Miko raised a number of concerns. He said that a study of the savings and loan problem had shown that the cost was $2,000 for every individual in the country. “The people who were supposed to be the watchdogs didn’t do their jobs. The five Senators should be called to task too,” referring to the so-called “Keating Five,” United States Senators who met privately with savings and loan magnate Charles Keating, who was under investigation by federal regulators. The five senators also received campaign contributions from Keating.
