During the next month, housing in Rappahannock County will be surveyed as part of a rehabilitation project funded by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
The purpose of the survey, according to County Administrator John McCarthy, is to identify properties that need repairs to make them safer and more comfortable for their residents. Information gathered during the survey will be used to select houses which qualify for rehabilitation work.
The initial survey, Mr. McCarthy said, Mill be “drive-by,” conducted by employees of Land and Community Associates. They will look at a variety of home improvement needs, including roof repairs, siding, wells and septic drainfields, windows and other weatherproofing, electrical improvements and other repair needs. . “The intent of the survey is to find out the type and extent” of housing problems in the county, Mr. McCarthy said. “It will assess the cost to bring the house up to code standards for safety.”
Most of the survey work will be done in and around the county’s villages, including Washington, Sperryville, Flint Hill, WoodviUe, Laurel Mills and Chester Gap.
During July and August, Land and Community Associates representatives Mill be talking with occupants of housing identified as possibly qualifying for grant assistance. The surveyors will identify themselves vrith business cards and a letter of introduction from Mr. McCarthy.
