We have yet to work out a compromise arrangement over my tool box, however. I have a large tool box, with a tray on the top where I keep my small handtools — pliers, screwdrivers and things. One day I happened to leave it open on the front terrace, because I had gone off to fix something at the back of the house. When I came back, a half hour later, I found all the tools scattered around the box, and Adam standing in the middle of the array. He had taken them out, one by one, and set them on the ground just like I would do if I was getting ready to repair something.
What was worse, he wouldn’t let me near. Clearly, by his hisses and threats he was letting me know those shiny tools were his, not mine, and it was not until Julia drove him into his pen for the night that I could get my tool box back.
