To the editor:
As captive members of the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative we must as members begin to take an active roll and question the rates that we all must pay for electrical service.
Also, we need to examine the type of management at the R.E.C. that forces us to pay one of the highest utility rates in the state of Virginia. Would you believe R.E.C. members pay $83.69 per 1,000 kilowatt hours as compared to Potomac Edison customers, who pay $60.71 per kilowatt hours?
Through recent investigations of the management at R.E.C. we have discovered that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been wasted. But what is the big deal? Apparently none, because the cost is just passed along to us, the unsuspecting captive member. So let the waste continue!
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative will just file a rate increase request with the blessings of the State Corporation Commission and the uncontrolled waste will continue.
Our local representatives to this outrage are the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. They are nominated by themselves and elected by a small number of members and member proxies at the annual meeting. They appear to be more interested in meetings, all expenses paid, at Disney World, Las Vegas or wherever, than they are at controlling R.E.C. management, waste, employment practices and the rates we the members ultimately must pay.
