The progression was natural.
Sheila O’Brien and her staff at the School House Restaurant in Flint Hill have been helping at Camp Fantastic for two years. “We’ve been lucky enough to donate the ice cream sundaes for the international buffet put on by Rappahannock County volunteers. It really touched our hearts,” Mrs. O’Brien said of their experience at the week-long camp for children with cancer held every August at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center under the auspices of Special Love, the National Institute of Health and the Virginia Extension Service.
“We wanted to be more involved, but there’s only so much we could do up there in Harmony Hollow. So we decided to try something down here,” Mrs. O’Brien said, explaining why the School House Restaurant’s Great American Cookout decided to go “Fantastic” on July 22 with a benefit for the program.
In the eight years since Tom and Sheila Baker of Winchester organized the first camping session at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center for a handful of kids, Camp Fantastic and Special Love have grown.
