ers explained, but the costs of travel, accomodations and other expenses are usually prohibitive. “This year, 75 percent of the money was provided by the school.” Five of the six representatives are in the gifted and talented program, and the school’s contribution to the trip was drawn from that program.

Also helping with the $4,000 cost of the trip were two locally-based corporations, Blue Ridge Technology in Flint Hill and South Wales Corp., a development company based in Culpeper.

All of the students had placed among the top in individual and team events at the Virginia TSA competition, held earlier in the spring.

At the national conference, Mr. Vickers said, the students could enter other events as well as the ones they had placed in at the state level.

Mr. Vickers said that all six of the students “gave up other things to participate in this conference,” and added he was “satisfied and pleased” with each performance. He said Jeremy Tole gave his spot at Boys State to another candidate, Liz Oliver missed a 4-H event and Bryan Clark missed one week of summer camp which he had already planned.

But the sacrifices paid off.

Besides Dunagan’s first place win in CAD (architectural drawing) and his third place showing in CAD (mechanical drawing), Oliver, Rogers and Clark placed in the top 10 in the nation in several individual events — including a new pilot contest using student-designed and built mousetrap cars, Technology Bowl Levels I and II, written and oral presentations, bridge building and drawing interpretation.
