In addition, the team of Oliver, Clark and Tole placed sixth in the nation in the Technology Bowl Level II written competition, while the team of Dunagan, Rogers and Smiley placed fifth in the Technology Bowl, Level I.

“It was very hectic and busy,” Mr. Vickers said of the schedule in Texas, adding that from the moment they arrived until they packed up to leave, competitions, meetings and practice sessions kept them continuously occupied.

“Everyone was very serious and professional,” Dunagan said. Mr. Vickers added that the students also “looked very professional,” wearing their navy TSA blazers, red ties, white shirts and gray slacks or skirts.

Even though 14-year-old Dunagan, the son of Tony and Fransi Dunagan of Boston, is familiar with competition, he said he felt competition at the national level as stiff and that the other students were wellprepared for their events.

Earlier this year, Dunagan won the Rappahannock County Elementary School science fair, where his project was named “Best in Show,” and he brought home a third place for the same project from the regional science fair. He won awards at TSA’s regional competition in CAD, extemporaneous speaking and creed competitions.

He said that the Pennsylvania youth who took first place in CAD (mechanical drawing), told the judges that the project he had been assigned was familiar and he needed a more difficult problem. “I knew then I wasn’t winning,” Dunagan said of the three-hour competition, in which he and 25 other students had to identify an object from an isometric drawing.

Through work during the school year and preparatory sessions before the national competition, Dunagan said he felt prepared to complete his CAD architectural problem: converting a garage into a family room and adding another garage. The reSAM
