The annual barbecue sponsored by the Amissville Ruritan Club is scheduled for this Saturday, July 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Amissville carnival grounds. The beef for the barbecue will be pit cooked and served with a tangy sauce. The chefs are the members of the Ruritan Club.

Mrs. W.M. Fletcher, better
known as Mattie Ball, added some Rappahannock flavor to NBC’s Today Show on Friday, July 5 when information on her and her recipes were used during a feature on a new cookbook. Mrs. Fletcher lives in Washington. The book, An American Folklife Cookbook by Joan Nathan, was published in 1984 by Schocken Books in New York. The book includes a biographical sketch of Mrs. Fletcher with 13 of her recipes.
Eric Heflin, formerly of the Front Royal Police Department, joined the Rappahannock Sheriffs Department as a deputy on July 1. Her served in the Army’s military police before beginning work as a Front Royal policeman in 1981. He has received specialized training in arson detection, physical evidence collection and homicide investigation.
