Though the vendors began packing their wares in the late afternoon, the venue merely shifted to the lawn in front of Avon Hall, the Carrigans’ home. There was music, Arabian horses strutted and children were delighted with games organized by the Child Care and Learning Center. Hot and tired spectators spread out blankets on the shady hill behind the courthouse to enjoy a picnic dinner before the fireworks display.
Mr. Carrigan addressed the crowd briefly, using Beryamin Franklin’s “Motion for Prayers in the Convention,” an oration delivered during deliberations leading to the Declaration of Independence, as a reference. Mr. Carrigan urged the crowd, as Mr. Franklin urged his contemporaries, to invoke “divine Providence” on our behalf.
“To that kind Providence,” Mr. Franklin said, “we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? or do we imagine we no longer need its assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men.”
And as dusk fell, bringing finally a cooling breeze through the trees, as the National Anthem played and the fireworks burst above Avon Pond, the applause of the crowd left no doubt as to the day’s success. “It was probably one of our best displays,” Chief Roach said of the fireworks.
But with this year’s success scarcely a week old, Chief Roach and the Washington VFD are already looking ahead to the 30th anniversary cele- * bration next year.
