many oi us as nepuDUcans nave been trying to get the government out of businesses,” Mr. Herndon said. “When the savings and loans were turned loose, I had friends with the savings and loan lobby. It was not their intent to have happen what did happen. It was well intended when it started.”
Mr. Herndon also commended Rep. Slaughter for being labelled a “quiet” man in Time magazine.
Nol Putnam said that the amount of money for the NEA was “no more than the government spends on military bands. But the effects are wonderful when they come to the local community.” He said funds from NEA would be used so groups of children could come to his forge in Warrenton to see how blacksmthing is done. “The bulk of the money goes to quiet work. It’s small support to enrich the lives of children. In 20 years the NEA has made two mistakes. I hope you can be persuaded to change your mind.”
“I can’t change my mind,” Rep. Slaughter said.
‘We find out how you stand after the fact,” Mr. Putnam said. “How can we have impact before? Is there nothing we can say to make you change your mind?”
“I think it’s bad policy to support funds for pornography,” Rep. Slaughter said.
Claudia Putnam said she also supports NEA funding. She said that grants from the NEA have been used to support the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community, the Middle Street Gallery, and artists in residence in the schools. “None of this concerns pornography. I don’t believe anybody in Rappahannock County is concerned that funds from NEA have been used to support pornography in Rappahannock.”
