Gradually he got to be more friendly with Julia, and more competitive with me, until the mock attacks turned into real ones. He found he could peck me in the anjdes, and on the legs, and my shouting at him seemed only to make matters worse.

Fortunately Adam doesn’t interfere with me too much when I am alone and doing jobs around the farm. He stands back at a safe distance when I move the hay, and keeps clear of the wheelbarrow when I am moving soil. I do most of my wood-sawing in his living quarters, under the verandah, and he doesn’t seem to mind.
