He said he also supports the line item veto “so the President can line out these things instead of accepting the whole package.”
Mr. Miko also spoke on immigration. “We’re all concerned about the health of senior citizens. There are studies of smoking. As a person gets older, sooner or later they will be a burden on the rest of us. Anybody who is smoking, just don’t let them in.” He noted that $3 billion of foreignaid was going to Israel. “That’s a hell of a lot of money for a little country,” he said.
Finally he suggested that Senators be limited to two six-year terms. “They forget the common people,” he said. He suggested that Congressmen be limited to six twoyear terms. “Then they’ve got to get out,” he said. “Of course, once they get out, then they become lobbyists.”
Diane Wood said her concerns were “child care, health and the environment.” She said she had quit her teaching job to stay home with her children. She said more and more studies “agree children need to be cared for by a parent.”
She said she sees many of her friends returning to work and paying someone else care to for their children. “They had their salary and child care credit” on income taxes while she wasn’t eligible for that credit. “We need federal government incentives to help families raise children.” She said she was also concerned about health insurance and the malpractice problem, particularly in obstetrics.
Rep. Slaughter said there had been several child care bills in the Congress. “The child care legislation I favored would not have provided
