Farming, open space and tax bttts
The Rappahannock League for 1 Environmental Protection will hold its : annual meeting on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Gay St. Theatre in Washington beginning at • 4:45 p.m. The meeting will include a • program focusing on the connection • between farming, open space or undeveloped land and the real estate tax bills each county landowner will receive ; soon. The participants will include Alex Sharp, stff assistant to the Piedmont Environmental Council and RLEP, Peter White, a member of the Rappahannock County Agricultural Advisory Commrttee, \ John McCarthy, the county administrator, ; and a member of the county's farming community. Their presentations will focus ; on the relative demands of farm land and ; open space on the county's tax base, the status and future of farming in the county, and farming from a farmer's perspective, as well as the viewpoint of local government. The meeting is free and open to the public, : as well as RLEP members.

As part of its "Sacred Cows" • exhibition, Washington's Middle Street ; Gallery will sponsor a panel discussion at - the Town Hall on Saturday, Sept. 8 at7:30 p.m. The panel will include painter and sculptor Lynn Schmidt, painter and teacher Meredith Rode, painter Alice Sims and attorney Douglas Baumgardner. The panel's topic will be "Sacred Cows: Arts in Crisis." There is no charge for the event, which will follow the opening reception for "Sacred Cows" at the gallery from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The public fs invited to both events.
