In addition, the team requested an extra practice last Saturday night after a scrimmage against Madision, the regional champion last season. Despite losing the scrimmage, the coach said, she felt optimistic about the team’s effort. It was the Panthers’ first game of the season, while it was Madison’s third outing.
After the graduation of standout Susie Dearing last year, Coach Leake has stressed a team effort for the coming season.
This season Page, Central and Strasburg represent the top teams in the Bull Run District. “Strasburg is probably the toughest,” Coach Leake said. The Panthers face a disadvantage due to a lack of a youth basketball program and the school’s small size.
. But the team’s spirit makes up for that lack, she said, pointing to last season’s record. “We went 8-8 and beat some teams with summer programs .. . That goes to show how hard the girls work.
“The dedication is there,” she said of the team. “They are focused and disciplined. Everybody has a team camaraderie — they work together.”
