agencies in the county. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know so many more people who are working to support families,” she said.
What will happen when the year is over and the $80,000 in grant money runs out? Mrs. Sharp hopes that the children who have been involved in the program this year will be successful in kindergarten next year.
Each year some children are held back in kindergarten. These are the children the program is trying to reach, she said. If the program succeeds in its objectives, the taxpayers should benefit, as children with the advantage of a preschool background are more likely to be successful in school, less likely to be held back, and less likely to drop out, she said.
Mrs. Sharp is also applying along with Culpeper, Madison and Greene counties for federal money to run a Head Start program starting next summer.
The Head Start program will differ from this year’s program in that it will be only a four-hour day for the children enrolled. Mrs. Sharp plans
