They like going to school so they can play with their friends, and while they are there, they are learning small and large motor skills, colors and numbers and how to get along with other children.

Mrs. Sharp explained that the state set up a pool of money for localities that do not have Head Start programs funded by the federal government to propose similar programs for serving four-year olds. Rappahannock is one of 47 counties and 15 cities in the state which do not have Head Start.

Mrs. Sharp’s proposal to use grant funds to serve approximately 17 “at risk” four-year olds in a pilot project is one of five projects which were funded this year. The state’s Council on Child Day Care and Early Childhood Programs, which distributed the money, funded another seven grants for research on starting such projects Mrs. Sharp said.
