“Writing can be a major boost to the ego of a student when he shares it with someone else,” she said, and with practice both the quality and the quantity of their writing will improve.
At the end of the day Ms Moody asked the teachers to prepare a lesson plan for one of their less successful lessons using the ideas of “Reading to Learn.”
Reflecting on the day several teachers said they had gotten ideas they intend to use in the classroom. They were particularly interested in using more student writing in their teaching and in involving the students more by drawing on what they already know.
Some were disappointed not to have received more specific ideas on how to help students who are struggling with reading. Some felt the information could have been presented in a half-day rather than a full-day session, though they did appreciate the opportunity to work in small groups and share ideas.
