Coach Renee Leake senses dedication in her Lady Panthers basketball team “more than ever” this year.
“They are starting to realize what dedication and commitment it takes to be winners,” the coach said during a break from pre-season practice last week. “I feel real positive about the season.”
With a core of returning players from last year’s team and several promising newcomers, Coach Leake said the girls’ effort during tryouts has demonstrated their dedication.
Four seniors returned from last year’s squad, giving the team important experience and continuity.
Stephanie Jones will play at the center forward position, and should be a “key person” for the team this year. She is the strongest rebounder, the coach said, and has worked hard on her inside game. “It has improved tremendously.”
Deena Hitt is contending for a starting guard position. She has a strong outside shot, and Coach Leake said in pre-season practices Deena has concentrated on her ballhandling.
Edna Shanks “hustles more than anybody” on the team, the coach said. Her defensive efforts are also “very aggressive,” and she is also in contention for a place as a starting guard.
