New regulations governing the location and construction of private wells went into effect in Virginia on Sept. 1. The purpose of the regulations is to protect public health as well as ground water by reducing the potential for contamination, according to the state health department.
The regulations will not apply to existing wells. They cover all nonpublic wells under construction after Sept. 1. This includes wells for household, ground water source heat pump, agricultural and industrial use.
The regulations require a permit for the drilling of private wells. The fee for a permit is $25. Permits will be issued by the Department of Health when a VDH inspection and evaluation shows the well site meets
