so doing, he sends a message not only to Virginians but to the nation that here is a man unafraid to do what the Congress of the United States won’t do — cut spending practically across the board to get the deficit under control even if there may be huge political risks involved. In others words, put principle above politics.
As it happens, putting principle above politics is good politics in the governor’s case. If his party is looking for someone to be a national candidate, someone who can appeal to voters across the spectrum, someone to be an alternative to Jesse Jackson, now they have in Gov. Wilder a man of demonstrated courage, prudence and social consciousness who might be an ideal southern running mate for a northerner like Bill Bradley or Mario Cuomo.
Not only that but Gov. Wilder has pledged not to raise state taxes during his administration, a pledge he seems more likely to keep than George Bush. He is out-Republicaning Republicans when it comes to making noises about holding down taxes and taking a meat ax to spending.
