And though the Governor doesn’t really need legislative approval for most of his deficit reduction proposals, he says he will submit them anyway to the General Assembly when it meets in January. That may have more to do with enlightened self-interest, or “CYA”, then a strong desire to get others into the act, but it does spread the onus rather cleverly.
Meanwhile, Virginia Republicans, scenting a strong campaign issue, noted that while they had called two years ago for establishment of a $200 million reserve fund, Democrats ignored the advice and the Battles Administration went on adding to the state bureaucracy.
The party has announced a statewide petition drive calling for changes in Virginia’s antiquated budget process to make drafting of the budget open to more legislators.
